Flight to China
Flight to China

This painting underwent a lot of struggle and changes and the title is a direct reference to my recent trip to Beijing.
It's about the passage of time as you drift across different terrain - I remember some coastal edges on previous journeys over Russia - and physical movement and space. I wanted to create a parallel for these elements with paint, thin washes of paint, ink marks, isolated shapes and colours. The title also refers to the inspiration I have gained from 4 trips to China and my love and exploration for calligraphic brush strokes. I often work with ink on rice paper and I wanted to bring aspects of that approach in to the composition and mark making on canvas.
This is a painting that relates well to its actual size as every part of the painting relates to that size and physical space.
Acrylic and ink on canvas
110 x 70 cm
