'Arrowheads in Lemba Valley,' (Cyprus series)
'Arrowheads in Lemba Valley,' (Cyprus series)

This acrylic painting is on a large and heavy piece of wood and the photo needs to be re-done as the edges of the wood have not been cropped to show only the painting - but it gives an idea of this piece.

Painted onto gesso, this referenced lightly the recent series of 'Cyprus Poems,' made after a trip to Cyprus. I did not paint from a fixed idea, I wanted the paint's internal life to suggest forms and colours and rhythms. As I painted the forms began to remind me of Lemba valley (now covered in houses), which stretches down to the coast, and memories of looking for ancient arrowheads in the earth. It is about the passage of time, depicted by the rhythms across the painting and the time it takes for the eye to move around the elements, and also through the reference to environmental changes.
